Once upon a time, a family from Rochester, Michigan moved to Sanibel Island, Florida with their six children. Norm and Bev Primeau had retired, but soon found themselves restless and looking for purpose. Bev discovered a love for retail and began selling shells at a local store on Sanibel Island, while Norm had a passion for selling sungl
Once upon a time, a family from Rochester, Michigan moved to Sanibel Island, Florida with their six children. Norm and Bev Primeau had retired, but soon found themselves restless and looking for purpose. Bev discovered a love for retail and began selling shells at a local store on Sanibel Island, while Norm had a passion for selling sunglasses and bikinis. They decided to purchase an old gas station building in Times Square on Ft Myers Beach and started their own specialty clothing store, the West Coast Surf Shop.
Their hard work and dedication paid off as they grew the brand to five locations and introduced prestigious brands such as Tag Hauer, Ocean Pacific, Lightning Bolt, Maui Jims, and for a time, they were the largest dealer of Oakleys in the state of Florida. But it wasn't just about the business for Norm and Bev. They became involved in the community by sponsoring AVP volleyball tournaments, hosting skimboard competitions, and supporting local events.
Their legacy lives on at the legacy tower directly in front of La Ola’s continues to be a beloved part of the Ft Myers Beach and Sanibel Island communities. The family's story is one of perseverance, passion, and a deep love for the beauty of the island. The West Coast Surf Shop is more than just a store, it's a symbol of the connection between the people and the place they call home.
Today, the legacy tower is the lone building left after hurricane destroyed our property and is still owned and operated by the Primeau family, and they continue offer that small family business mentality and share the vibes with all who seek them.
